A Russian grocery store in Staten Island, an in-home art gallery in Harlem, and a union rally with 200 New York City construction workers—my first few weeks in journalism school have taken me to unexpected places, to be sure. Though chasing story ideas around New York City has been an exciting process, it’s also been surprisingly difficult. After living in Manhattan as an intern last summer, I had assumed I’d make an easy adjustment to city life this time around.

Not quite.

For all of my supposed familiarity with New York, I’ve still had plenty of rookie moments in the past few weeks. I’ve taken the subway the wrong direction for miles. I’ve planted a sandal-clad foot into fresh dog poop on the sidewalk. I’ve overdressed for the humidity and forgotten my umbrella when it rained. But the hardest part about migrating to the Big Apple hasn’t been these amateur slip-ups, it’s been about finding my New York state of mind.
